The 7 best features on Samsung's Galaxy Note 7 (none of which are on the iPhone)

We're just few moments away from Samsung's official Galaxy Note 7 release, and the reviews are in. We covered the hot new phablet in our in-depth Galaxy Note 7 review and here's the TL;DR version: It will be the best phablet on the planet when it launches this Friday, and it'll almost certainly still be the best phablet on the planet next month, even after Apple releases its next-generation iPhone 7 Plus.

We obviously recommend reading our full Galaxy Note 7 review before you reach any conclusions. But for those looking for a quick overview of the best new functionality Samsung's latest phablet has to offer, we've compiled the phone's seven hottest features in this post.

S Pen

Samsung's S Pen is at the center of the Note experience and it's better than ever. The physical stylus itself has been improved so that writing with it feels almost like writing with a ballpoint pen. Then, the Note 7's software has been further enhanced with great new S Pen features like a GIF maker, a translate feature, a magnifier and more. My favorite new feature is the ability to pin a memo to the phone's sleep screen, so you don't even have to unlock the handset in order to see the memo.

Water- and dust-resistance

This is a huge deal, and it speaks for itself. The Galaxy Note 7's IP68 certification means that it can be completely submerged in water and come away working just fine. As expensive as flagship smartphones are these days -- the Note 7 costs $850 -- every single high-end handset should have an IP68 rating.

Camera

Every smartphone out there obviously has a camera these days, but none of them can touch the Dual Pixel rear camera on the Note 7. The low-light performance is phenomenal, it has the fastest auto-focus on the planet, and picture clarity is unmatched. The only complaint in my review was that it's the same exact camera as the one featured on the Galaxy S7. We've always seen progress made from model to model, so I hope this isn't the start of a trend.

Display

Samsung is simply the best in the business when it comes to smartphone displays, and the Galaxy Note 7 pushes it even further ahead of its rivals. The quad HD Super AMOLED display on the Note 7 is breathtaking, featuring incredible clarity and colors that leap off the screen. You won't find a better display on a phone. Period.

Expandable storage

This seems like a no-brainer but there are still smartphones out there that ship without a microSD card slot. I'm looking at you, Apple. The Note 7 comes with just one option for internal storage -- 64GB -- which simplifies things for Samsung. Then, users can add up to 256GB of additional space with a memory card. Of note, the phone supports up to 2TB but the biggest microSD card out there right now is 256GB.

Secure Folder

The all new Secure Folder feature in Samsung's TouchWiz software gives you a special folder that's protected by an additional layer of security. You can store files, photos, videos or even apps in the folder. To access those files and apps, you'll need to authenticate again with a password, fingerprint scan or an iris scan, which means you can unlock your phone and let someone else use it without worrying that he or she might access your private data.

Battery

3,500 mAh... fast wireless charging... even faster wired charging... two different power saving modes... the Galaxy Note 7 really is the total package when it comes to battery performance. Hold your breath! Samsung has launched the Galaxy Note 7 in India

South Korean tech giant, Samsung has launched the Galaxy Note 7 smartphone in India. The phone, which was globally announced last week has been priced at Rs 59,900.

Samsung also launched the GearFit 2 fitness band and the icon X wireless earbuds along with the smartphone.

Pre-orders starts today and the phone will start shipping from September 2.

The Galaxy Note 7 is an annual celebration of the best Samsung has to offer. The Galaxy Note series has traditionally combined all the best features of the Galaxy line-up, along with the proprietary S-pen, Samsung's smart stylus.

The Galaxy Note 7 integrates tonnes of great features seen in the Galaxy S7 Edge, including the processor, RAM and the rear camera. But even with similar features under the hood, the Note 7 sits above the S7 and the S7 Edge in the Galaxy line up because of a superior display and enhanced privacy features.

With a 5.7-inch Quad HD screen, the Galaxy Note 7 maintains the phablet form factor. The Super AMOLED display also comes protected with the latest Corning Gorilla Glass 5. The screen is curved at the edges, but unlike the previous curved screens seen in the Note Edge 2 and S7 Edge, the metal body and glass bends together, giving it a 3D finish. This screen has also been rated by the folks at display mate as the best one ever, and it's also capable of playing back HDR video.

This is also the first Galaxy Note to come with IP68 dust and water resistant rating which makes the device waterproof over 1.5 metres and 30 minutes.

Under the hood, it's the same 64-bit Exynos 8890 octa-core processor we've seen in the S7 Edge and with 4GB of RAM.

The camera is also borrowed from the S7 Edge- the highly capable dual pixel 12-Megapixel rear camera with f/1.7 wide lens and smart optical image stabilization, phase detection auto focus and LED flash. The front camera is 5-megapixel with a f/1.7 wide angle lens.

The Galaxy Note 7 also packs some nifty security features. Apart from the fingerprint scanner, there is an iris sensor which scans your eyes to unlock the phone.

The S-pen too wasn't left behind. The S-pen is now thinner and more precise and thanks to the newly updated firmware, the S-pen can now magnify any content, translate written notes and make GIFs from any video in just a few simple taps. It's also water resistant.

The phone is also the first Samsung phone to feature a USB-Type C port which is backwards compatible with the older USB ports.

The battery on the Note 7 is a 3500mAh behemoth. Although its nothing close to the 5,000mAh smartphones that are in vogue this year, optimizations under the hood makes it last a day (almost).

As with all Samsung products, with great specs, comes a hefty price tag and the Galaxy Note 7 is rather expensive. But it's also premium as hell.

Apple iPhone 7 will have dual rear camera, new home button: Report

Apple iPhone 7 will come with dual rear camera, and a home button with support for tactile feedback, says Bloomberg.

Apple iPhone 7’s launch is just a couple of weeks away, and rumours have already claimed to reveal most of the features of the upcoming devices. Now notable a journalist, who has accurately predicted Apple iPhone, MacBook, iPad rumours in the past for 9to5Mac, confirmed in a new report for Bloomberg the iPhone 7 series will have a dual-rear camera, a home button with taptic feedback (similar to what Apple Watch has). And yes, the 2016 series will mark the end of the headphone jack.

The death of the 3.5 headphone jack is what many earlier leaks and rumours have been claiming, but what is interesting is reported, says Apple will go for Bluetooth supported headphones and introduce dual speakers at the bottom. Recently, we’ve seen leaks coming out of China of Earpods with a Lightning connector at the bottom. The dual speaker bit was also claimed by earlier leaks of alleged iPhone 7 cases.

But what is also interesting in Gurman’s report is that it doesn’t use the word iPhone 7, and instead sticks with the phrase new iPhone. No we don’t know whether this is deliberate, but reports are claiming iPhone 7 won’t be the name for this year’s devices. Instead iPhone 6SE or iPhone 2016 are the options that Apple could be considering. Apple’s iPhone turns 10 in 2017, and Cupertino might be reserving the iPhone 7 title for the anniversary year.

According to report, the dual-rear camera set up won’t appear on smaller version of iPhones, possibly the 4.7-inch version. His report says the dual cameras will take pictures simultaneously in different colour set-up, and this will result in a brighter set of photos, especially in low-light. Apple won’t be the first company to introduce a dual-rear camera on a phone. The recently launched Huawei P9 has a dual rear camera, one of which shoots only in mono-chrome and the other in colour; the final picture is a combination of these two, and according to Huawei it results in a better and brighter picture.

In case of the iPhone 6s Plus, the camera was outdone by rival Samsung’s Galaxy S7 edge, which offered a much better low-light performance. With the new iPhones, Apple could well regain the title of the world’s best smartphone camera.

But where an overhaul of the iPhone design goes, the new series might seem more like a ‘S’ upgrade, and this has been indicated by several reports, including analyst notes to investors. According to reports, a new glass design body, and a bigger OLED display will be introduced with the iPhone 8, and for now Apple will stick with the design of the iPhone 6s, though the new phones won’t have the antenna lines that run across the top and bottom of the current phone’s back.

A WSJ report had also hinted the new iPhones will be water-resistant and will start at 32GB base model instead of the 16GB.  Apple is expected to launch the new iPhone in the first week of September, and it could be in stores by September 16. We’ll have to wait and see which of these rumours come true on launch day.
